Arts & Crafts

Willy and Kaye Nunn work in their mobile workshop situated up the stairs at the end of The Hermitage Coffee Shop, crafting New Zealand native timbers such as Red Beech, Totara and Burl of Silver Beech.

Willy uses the scarce and quite precious Burls from the Silver Beech Tree to create unique bowl and platter forms. Fence-posts made of native timbers such as Totara and New Zealand Red Beech are used to create distinctive jewellery boxes and vases. With each piece Willy exposes the post’s internal beauty, combining this with its naturally weathered exterior.

Kaye uses acrylic paint on wooden characters cut out in the workshop to create beautifully decorated and amusing pieces. An important part of the craft for Kaye is the sometimes meaningful, sometimes amusing sayings and words that she writes on the pieces. For no extra cost Kaye is happy to add personalised messages, names and dates to any piece, immediately upon request.

When you visit call in for a chat and watch the artists at work.

The Hermitage Souvenir Shop is devoted to selling locally produced Arts and Crafts. As well as a range of turned wood items including bowls & ornaments made by Willy & Kaye, the Souvenir shop sells paintings of local scenery by New Zealand artists and hand-made paua shell jewellery.
